Meeting Patzun

Well where I begin. It has been quite a day filled with all kinds of new experiences, new faces, new landscapes, and some new work. I fell asleep only with the assistance of headphones. Remember the melody of roosters, dogs and all kinds of other racket? Yea, not that conducive to sleep. Lydia and I spent the morning running errands and meeting different family members, taxi drivers, work friends, and butchers. Our first walk was a 30 minute trek out to the school where I will be making the map. It was down the hill in the middle of some more rural farm land. Seeing three young boys following their father out the fields on bikes, made me realize how easy and blessed my childhood was. Also it made all the chores I do when I go back home seem very easy. Back in town it seemed like Lydia was the most popular person in town. She was always introducing me to some else that she had become good friends with or even just a street vendor she passes often. After a session of Insanity (a work out video) and some lunch I was put in the custody of a volunteer for a church, Chris, who I accompanied to a church to work some construction with two Guatemalan’s who spoke Kaqchikel (the local Mayan dialect) almost the entire time I was there. It was a strange and uncomfortable feeling to not understand any of what people are saying right next to you. It is a feeling that I haven’t experienced and a while, but have a feeling I will be experiencing a lot over the next few weeks. That’s not all that happened today, but I think that is where this entry will end. Another busy day tomorrow and this time I get venture out on my own.
